What convicted driver insurance can cover

Drink-driving, no insurance, totting-up bans, and convictions that have nothing to do with driving. The brokers we work with quote all of them.

How it works

  1. Start with the reg. We look up the car from the plate, so there's less to type.
  2. We match you with specialists. Your details go to UK brokers who arrange this kind of cover every day.
  3. They call you with quotes. Compare what comes back, ask questions, and only go ahead if it's right.

Can I get car insurance with a driving conviction?

Yes. Many mainstream insurers decline drivers with certain convictions, but specialist insurers do quote for them. That includes drink or drug driving, driving without insurance, speeding points and totting-up bans. The key is to declare everything accurately so the quote reflects your real record and will stand if you claim.

Kompare doesn't insure anyone. Your details go to UK brokers who work with insurers that take convicted drivers, and they call you with what they find.

What do the conviction codes mean?

Each motoring offence has a code that appears on your driving record. Insurers ask for the code, the date and the penalty. You can check your codes and points online with the DVLA using your licence number and National Insurance number.

CodeWhat it is
SP30Exceeding the speed limit on a public road
CU80Using a mobile phone while driving, or not being in proper control of the vehicle
IN10Using a vehicle uninsured against third-party risks
DR10Driving or attempting to drive with alcohol above the limit
MS90Failing to give information about the identity of a driver
TT99Disqualification under the totting-up procedure

How long do points and convictions stay on my licence?

Most endorsements stay on your driving record for four years. Some, including drink and drug driving offences such as DR10, stay for 11 years from the date of conviction. How long an insurer asks about is separate: many ask about convictions from the last five years, so check the question each time.

What is a totting-up ban?

If you build up 12 or more penalty points within three years, you can be disqualified from driving under the totting-up rules. The ban is recorded with the code TT99. After a ban you may need to reapply for your licence, and you must declare the ban when you ask for insurance.

Do I have to declare a spent conviction?

Unspent convictions must be declared when an insurer asks. Once a conviction is spent under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act, you generally don't have to declare it. If you are not sure whether something is spent, tell the broker and they can check how each insurer asks.

Not declaring an unspent conviction can mean a claim is refused or the policy is cancelled. That can make future cover harder to find.

What affects the price of convicted driver insurance?

The type of conviction matters most, along with how recent it was and how many you have. Insurers also look at the usual things: your age, the car, where it is kept, your mileage and your claims history. Time without further offences counts in your favour.

Convicted driver insurance questions

What happens after I submit?

Your details go to specialist brokers who deal with convicted driver insurance every day. One of them will call you to run through your options and quotes.

Is there any obligation?

None. You can take a quote, ask for changes, or walk away. Nothing is bought until you say so.

Who are the brokers?

UK-based insurance brokers authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Kompare Limited (FCA reference 794660) is an appointed representative of Rainbow Connected Limited (FRN 749881).

How long does it take?

The form takes about two minutes. Brokers usually call back during working hours.

What if I don't know the reg?

Tap "Don't know your reg?" under the plate and tell us the make, model and year instead.

Do I have to declare a conviction?

Unspent convictions must be declared. The form asks plainly so the quotes you get back are ones that will actually stand.

Do I need to declare non-motoring convictions?

If they are unspent and the insurer asks, yes. Many insurers ask about criminal convictions as well as motoring ones. The form asks so the brokers can find insurers who take them.

How do I check my points?

Use the DVLA's online View Driving Licence service with your licence number, National Insurance number and postcode.

Can I get insured straight after a ban ends?

Yes. Specialist insurers quote for drivers returning after a ban. You will need your licence back first, and the ban must be declared.

Will my premium come down over time?

Insurers look at how recent a conviction is, so it usually counts for less as time passes without further offences. Each insurer has its own approach.

Does a speed awareness course count as a conviction?

A course isn't a conviction and doesn't put points on your licence. Some insurers still ask about courses, so answer the question as it is asked.
