What Are The Different Policy Types That I Can Take Out?

When taking out a mechanics insurance policy, you’ll be asked which type of cover you’d like to purchase. There are two levels of cover. Here are your options:

Road Risk

This is perfect for those based at home rather than at set premises. This helps cover the vehicles that are in the trader’s possession when on the road. This will help with situations such as driving a vehicle from your garage to a driveway, picking up or returning a vehicle to a customer, or testing a vehicle after repair work has finished.

Road Risk & Premises Cover

You will need a combined policy if you own and operate a business from a location, rather than out of your home. This is also essential if you employ workers, keep any stock, and store customers vehicles overnight. If you operate as a mobile mechanic, you will need to choose this option as the vehicles and contents inside your van will come under premises cover.

Frequently Asked Questions

We understand that taking out mechanics insurance can seem quite daunting. That’s why we’ve put together a collection of FAQs to answer any questions that you may have.

You’ll need mechanics insurance if you work as a full-time or part-time mechanic from a large business premises or out of your garage at home.
You have the choice to cover anything that your business uses or owns. This includes tools, machinery and stock, premises cover and employers liability (which is a legal requirement if you have anyone working for you). It is also important to consider factors such as public liability and product liability as in the event of an incident, a claim could set you back a considerable amount.
A lot of the insurers that we work with require you to be over the age of 25 in order to take out an insurance policy with them. If you are under-25, don’t be disheartened! There are companies out there who will represent you, just be mindful that you may end up paying more than those who are over 25.
To put it simply, you’re constantly working on vehicles that don’t belong to you. Any damage that you cause to those vehicles could land you in trouble and having to fight a legal battle.
