When taking out motor finance, you’ll be asked which type of finance you’d like to purchase. There are three types of finance you can apply for. Here are your options:
Hire Purchase is one of the most common forms of Motor Finance. This means that you’re hiring the vehicle from the lender until you’ve paid it off in full. The loan is secured against the vehicle and you won’t own it until the final payment has been made.
Please Note: The amount you pay-per-month will be affected by the size of the deposit you put down.
Personal Contract Purchase is similar to Hire Purchase in as much that you have fixed monthly repayments. The main difference is that at the end of your fixed term, you can:
A) Hand the car back to the dealer
B) Use the equity as a deposit for your next vehicle
C) Obtain ownership of the vehicle by paying the Guaranteed Minimum Future Value.
Please Note: If you go over your annual mileage or your car has damage that isn’t classed as ‘wear and tear’ - you may be subject to a charge from the lender.
A Personal Loan enables you to borrow a sum of money over a certain amount of time. If you go ahead with a Personal Loan to purchase a vehicle, you will own the vehicle from the moment the dealer receives the money for it. The biggest difference from HP and PCP is that the loan isn’t secured against the vehicle, so you’re free to sell the car at any point after purchase.
Please Note: If you have poor credit history, you’re less likely to get accepted for a personal loan.
A Guarantor Loan is suggested to an individual when they have a particularly poor credit score. This is because it involves a third-party acting as your guarantor if you fail to keep up with repayments. Usually a Guarantor will be a family member or friend. If you do fail to keep up with payments, the Guarantor will pay on your behalf.
Please Note: A large majority of the time, companies will ask that your Guarantor is a homeowner.
